ADU Conversions and Energy Code Compliance
There are four main types of ADU conversions: conversion of existing attached space, conversion of existing detached space, newly built attached, and newly built detached. Conversion of existing attached space, conversion of existing detached space, and newly built attached ADUs all fall under the addition, existing + addition, or existing + addition + alteration categories. Newly built detached ADUs fall under the new construction category. What this means for Energy Code compliance is the following:
- Addition, E+A, and E+A+A projects do not have to comply with the new construction section of the Energy Code
- New construction projects must comply with new construction Energy Code requirements, through either the prescriptive or performance pathway.
