Event Description

With growing awareness of the role of embodied carbon in the overall carbon footprint of construction, strategies for reduction tend to focus on a few high impact materials – namely, concrete and steel. We’ll discuss these as well as the potential in bio-based materials for reducing embodied carbon in residential and commercial construction.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand CALGreen requirements for embodied carbon that took effect July 2024 and were expanded in the 2025 code update.
  • Be able to categorize common building materials for their likely carbon impacts
  • Identify simple tools and resources to streamline carbon comparisons
  • Understand how bio-based materials can contribute to lower/net zero carbon projects
