SUMMARY:Carbon Smart Construction Happy Hour: Reducing Embodied Carbon
DESCRIPTION:Register \nJoin 3C-REN\, AIA Santa Barbara\, and the Central Coast Green Building Council for Carbon Smart Construction\, a new series of green building happy hours bringing together people from across the building and design community. \nEach event offers a chance to grab a drink\, connect with colleagues and new faces\, and dig into a different topic related to building better\, healthier\, and more sustainable buildings. From embodied carbon and bio-based materials to high-performance\, all-electric construction\, the series explores the ideas\, materials\, and practices shaping the future of building on the Central Coast. \nThis event is part of the Carbon Smart Construction series. \nEvent Description \nWith growing awareness of the role of embodied carbon in the overall carbon footprint of construction\, strategies for reduction tend to focus on a few high impact materials – namely\, concrete and steel. We’ll discuss these as well as the potential in bio-based materials for reducing embodied carbon in residential and commercial construction. \nLearning Objectives \n\nUnderstand CALGreen requirements for embodied carbon that took effect July 2024 and were expanded in the 2025 code update.\nBe able to categorize common building materials for their likely carbon impacts\nIdentify simple tools and resources to streamline carbon comparisons\nUnderstand how bio-based materials can contribute to lower/net zero carbon projects\n\nLearning Units \n1 AIA HSW LUs approved for this course \nInstructors  \nMichelle Zimney\, In Balance Green Consulting \nAmanda Martin\, Renewal Revolution
