SUMMARY:Higher-Performance Envelope + Balanced Ventilation
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nEnergy performance is increasingly dependent on buildings that limit air infiltration\, but that’s just one piece of higher performance roof and wall assembly. In this 3rd installment of our Higher-Performance series\, we’ll look at cost-effective strategies to make tight envelopes standard practice\, with special emphasis on thermal continuity and managing moisture. We’ll finish up with the partner to a tight envelope: balanced ventilation. Learning objectives: \n \n\n Learn the building science behind thermal bridging and air movement\, and the impacts on energy performance\, health\, and comfort\n  Learn the application and benefits of rain screens in the central coast climate\n Understand options for Insulation and air and vapor barriers and best practices for each\nIdentify balanced ventilation strategies and the costs and benefits of each.\n\nThere are AIA Continuing Education Units available: \n \n1.25 LU|HSW \n \nInstructors: Mike Horgan and Jennifer Rennick from In Balance Green Consulting \nInstructors: \n\nJennifer Rennick\, In Balance Green Consulting\nMike Horgan\, In Balance Green Consulting\nMichelle Zimney\, In Balance Green Consulting

SUMMARY:Minimizing Embodied Carbon by Design
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThis class will be taught by Larry Strain and Chris Magwood\, two thought leaders in the field of embodied carbon. Both\, unusually\, have careers combining research and practice. Larry\, co-founder of the award-winning Bay Area architecture firm of Siegel & Strain\, for decades has infused his design practice with applied research as a means of creating buildings that are both beautiful and green. Larry will share his recent work\, focused on analyzing the relative carbon impacts of low-carbon renovation of existing buildings versus construction of new\, low-carbon/net-zero buildings. Chris\, a natural building pioneer\, serves as executive director of the Endeavour Centre\, a not-for-profit sustainable building school in Ontario\, Canada\, where he applies his research via teaching and construction of low/no-carbon buildings. Chris will present his recent work on construction methods that maximize carbon sequestration.   \n  \nLearning Objectives  \nAfter completing this class\, participants will be able to:  \n\nDescribe the significance and scale of embodied carbon within the context of building lifecycle emissions. \nArticulate the carbon value of reusing and retrofitting existing buildings as compared with constructing new ones. \nIncorporate carbon-sequestering construction methods into building designs.  \nEnumerate the non-energy\, non-climate benefits of both building reuse and adoption of the illustrated building methods and strategies.  \n\n  \n2 AIA|HSW LU’s are available for this course \nInstructors: \n\nLarry Strain\, Siegel & Strain Architects\nChris Magwood\, the Endeavour Centre
