SUMMARY:High Performance Buildings: Designing for Utility Costs & Carbon Emissions
DESCRIPTION:Register \nEvent Description \nHow can we decide what features to upgrade in our building projects? Most project teams use code minimum\, manufacturers’ claims\, anecdotes\, and gut feelings to decide what insulation\, HVAC system\, and water heating system to use. This goes especially for solar and battery systems\, too. Nick Brown has developed an approach to use hourly energy compliance modeling data to calculate utility costs and carbon emissions\, so that these decisions can be made on an informed basis. We will use case studies to understand how to put this approach to work\, so that you choose the appropriate envelope\, mechanical\, and renewable energy systems for your projects. \nLearning Objectives \n\nLearn how to use compliance modeling software to make informed design decisions on envelope\, mechanical\, and renewable systems\nUnderstand how utility costs are calculated with solar systems\nUse case studies to show how to calculate return on investment for typical building features\nSee how Zero Net Carbon design can be achieved\n\nLearning Units \n\n1.5 AIA LUs pending for this course\n1.5 ICC CEUs pending for this course\n\nInstructor \nNick Brown\, Build Smart Group

SUMMARY:Crafting High Performance Enclosures: Roofs\, Walls\, and Floors
DESCRIPTION:Register \nEvent Description \nBuilding enclosures – the roof\, walls\, and floor – are the first line of defense between nature and people. Enclosure performance is optimized when air sealing and insulation – two underappreciated and typically underperforming features – are done to high-performance standards rather than the status quo. This class covers installation — the practical application of those principles on the job site – the hands-on activities that differentiate ‘business-as-usual’ from high-performance construction. These include best practices for air sealing\, insulation installation\, and window installation\, along with the tools and methods (e.g.\, blower door testing) used to measure the quality of work\, and the metrics against which the work can be evaluated. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDescribe preferred methods and materials used for air sealing different types of building openings\, and how to test the results;\nExplain the difference between conventional insulation practices and “Quality Insulation Installation (QII)” methods\, and how QII is verified;\nIdentify five common building enclosure installation flaws and how to avoid them.\nQuantify the magnitude of the gap between minimum energy code compliance and high performance\, where all energy features are confirmed with building performance test methods.\n\nLearning Units \n\n1.5 AIA LUs approved for this course\n1.5 ICC CEUs approved for this course\n\nInstructor \nJudy Rachel\, Home Performance Pro

SUMMARY:Recovery Ventilators: 2022 Energy Code Energy Savings and Compliance Credit
DESCRIPTION:Register \nEvent Description \nImproved health and cognitive performance. Easier Title 24 compliance. Utility bill savings. These are the reasons to consider incorporating Heat Recovery Ventilators & Energy Recovery Ventilators (collectively Recovery Ventilators or RVs) into your next high-performance home project. \nNick Brown\, the instructor\, installed his first RV in his home during COVID\, when his daughter and two friends did their schoolwork from the office together. CO2 levels spiked in the early afternoon in that room because only Title 24 minimum mechanical ventilation was designed into the house. He solved the problem by installing a Heat Recovery Ventilator and has advocated for these systems ever since. The new All-electric ADU he built has one\, as well\, and we will draw on these experiences and data gathered from these units to better understand these mechanical ventilation systems and their benefits. \nWe will also go over how to add an RV to a Title 24 compliance energy model and the change in energy use that results. We’ll present various configurations of RVs\, including through-the-wall paired units\, packaged HRVs and packaged ERVs\, and various ducting options. \nLearning Objectives \n\nUnderstand the basics of how Recovery Ventilators (RVs) work to improve indoor air quality in homes and reduce heating and cooling energy use\nLearn the energy code requirements for mechanical ventilation and how RVs produce a Title 24 compliance credit\nModel a case study home using RVs and examine the energy use in various configurations\nHear best practices for specifying and installing RVs\n\nLearning Units \n\n1.5 AIA HSW LUs approved for this course\n0.15 ICC CEUs approved for this course\n\nInstructor \nNick Brown\, Build Smart Group

SUMMARY:Nail the Sale: Getting Past Heat Pump Objections
DESCRIPTION:Register \nEvent Description \nHeat Pumps are quickly gaining traction as a preferred HVAC and water heating technology. California has a goal for 6 million installed heat pumps by 2030\, and state plans indicate that new gas furnace and water heaters will not be permitted after 2030. While the path forward for heat pumps seems clear\, the technology is still foreign to most homeowners. To meet the above-mentioned goals\, contractors and other industry professionals must arm themselves with the knowledge (and sometimes the data) to dispel myths about heat pumps. In this webinar\, you’ll hear from Larry Waters\, an HVAC industry veteran who switched his focus towards home performance in 2010 and towards inverter heat pumps in 2014. With over 400 heat pump installations under his belt\, Larry’s heard just about every objection in the book and will relay best practices for responding to such objections. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDevelop two consultative questions that will help prepare a response to a customer’s objection\nDescribe one reason why older vintage heat pumps spoiled the opinions of some customers & HVAC pros\nName three features of gas appliances that are disadvantageous\nExplain why heat pumps are the perfect fit for California’s climate\nList five reasons why heat pumps are better than gas furnaces\n\nLearning Units \n\n1.5 AIA LUs approved for this course\n1.5 ICC CEUs approved for this course\n\nInstructor \nLarry Waters\, Electrify My Home
