SUMMARY:Using Life Cycle Assessment & Embodied Carbon Calculators to Make Design and Product Choices
DESCRIPTION:Register \nThis hands-on training will equip participants with the practical knowledge and skills to leverage Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools and embodied carbon (EC) calculators in the architectural design and construction process. The course will guide attendees through each phase of a project\, from conceptual design to the as-built stage\, highlighting the application and benefits of different LCA tools like EPIC\, Tally\, and EC3. In response to current market needs\, this training also includes an overview of other popular LCA tools\, their costs and capabilities\, and the situations in which they are most effective. Participants will learn how to utilize these tools to make informed design decisions\, foster constructive conversations within the project team\, and track the project’s embodied carbon footprint. Furthermore\, we will explore strategies for incentivizing low-carbon procurement and identifying opportunities for future improvement. The objective is to empower participants to effectively integrate LCA and EC considerations into their projects\, fostering a more sustainable and carbon-conscious built environment. \nLearning objectives  \n\nLearn how to use EC/LCA tools effectively at each phase of design and construction\nLearn how to communicate across the design and construction team about EC/LCA topics\nUnderstand what decisions at each phase can lead to lower EC footprint\nBe able to track\, look back\, and learn from challenges in addressing EC\n\n1 AIA|LU available for this course

SUMMARY:Getting Past Heat Pump Objections
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nHeat Pumps are quickly gaining traction as a preferred HVAC and water heating technology\, but many customers and contractors are unfamiliar with heat pumps or remain skeptical. In order to meet California’s ambitious heat pump goals (6 million by 2030)\, contractors and other industry professionals must arm themselves with the knowledge (and sometimes the data) to dispel myths about heat pumps.  \nIn this webinar\, you’ll hear from Larry Waters\, an HVAC industry veteran who switched his focus towards home performance in 2010 and towards inverter heat pumps in 2014. With over 400 heat pump installations under his belt\, Larry’s heard just about every objection in the book and will relay best practices for responding to such objections.  \n   \nLearning Objectives  \n\nExplain why understanding a customer’s personality profile is important \nList one of the first steps to take before addressing an objection \nDescribe one reason why older vintage heat pumps spoiled the opinions of some customers & HVAC pros \nOffer one alternative solution for a customer who does not want a wall-mounted mini split \n\n  \n2 AIA LU’s available for this course  \n.20 ICC CEU’s available for this course  \n  \nInstructors:  \nLarry Waters\, Electrify My Home  \nAlex Sloan\, Electrify My Home

Have you ever wondered why a shower sometimes feels wimpy and what you can do about it without adding a boost pump? And\, given the trend toward decarbonization\, how do you pick a water heater that will provide customer satisfaction and be energy efficient? Would you like to know how to solve these and related problems in existing buildings and prevent them in new ones? We will discuss the answers to these and other questions during this fast-paced class.   \n  \nLearning Objectives  \n  \nAfter attending this class\, participants will be able to:  \n\nIdentify the causes underlying occupants’ number one hot water complaint (it takes too long for hot water to get from a water heater to fixtures) and what can be done to fix the problem in existing homes and prevent it in new ones.  \nDescribe the value of the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator to right-size the plumbing in single-family and multifamily dwellings. \nAssist homeowners in selecting replacement water heaters that will meet their household needs as well as State climate goals. \nSummarize the variables that need to be evaluated when replacing an existing non-heat pump water heater with a heat pump model. \n\n  \n1.5 AIA|HSW LU’s available for this course \nInstructors: \n\nGary Klein\, Gary Klein & Associates

SUMMARY:Remodeling—A Great Time to Improve Efficiency and Electrify
DESCRIPTION:A recording can be found here. \n  \nREGISTER\nThis class is intended to equip homeowners planning remodeling projects to work effectively with their design and building team to incorporate high-performance goals of efficiency\, comfort\, electrification\, etc.—and avoid common pitfalls. Managing even a simple project can be challenging enough\, but when you’re targeting high performance\, it takes extra care to make sure you get the results you hope for. This talk will cover: \n\nDefinitions and benefits of high performance\, efficiency\, electrification\, solar\, and batteries\nA quick introduction to State energy/climate goals\nThe planning process: gathering ideas and information and setting priorities\nPopular electric equipment options\nAssembling and working with your team\nCoordinating your team to access incentives

SUMMARY:Heat Pump Fundamentals: Space Conditioning and Water Heating - Class 4: High Performance Fundamentals Series
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThis is class 4 of 6 in 3C-REN’s High Performance Fundamentals Certificate series. Earn a 3C-REN certificate of completion after finishing the series and passing short quizzes at the end of each class. This series will be hosted twice throughout 2023.  \n  \nHaving gained a solid understanding of high-performance building enclosures from classes 1 through 3 in 3C-REN’s High Performance Fundamentals series\, participants are well-prepared for this class\, which will provide a foundation in the use of heat pumps for both space conditioning (heating and cooling) and water heating. The class will cover what a heat pump is and explain why heat pumps are essential elements of high performance buildings. Special attention will be paid to refrigerants: how heat pumps use them\, how to avoid leaks through proper installation\, and why it’s important to avoid leaks due to the damage they can cause to contractor profitability and the planet. An overview will be provided to aid in selecting\, sizing\, installing\, and commissioning heat pump equipment\, so that it performs as intended.  \nLearning Objectives  \nAfter attending this class\, participants will be able to:  \n\nDescribe in lay language what a heat pump is\, its benefits\, and how it works; \nDescribe the environmental consequence of releasing small quantities of refrigerant to the atmosphere; \nDefine heat pump performance metrics and variables that differentiate different models; \nExplain the process of sizing and selecting a heat pump; \nList\, in order\, the steps for installing and commissioning a heat pump.\n\n  \n1.5 AIA|HSW LU’s available for this course \nInstructors: \n\nDan Perunko\, Balance Point Home Performance
