SUMMARY:Building Tour of Four All-Electric Buildings to Reduce the Carbon Footprint - 2024 Central Coast Bioneers
DESCRIPTION:Register \n\nOn this tour\, you’ll have an inside look at all-electric green buildings that are energy efficient and powered completely or in part with renewable energy\, reducing their carbon footprints. The tour will cover one commercial building and three residential projects in San Luis Obispo.  If you’re thinking about decarbonizing your home or office\, this is a great showcase of projects to inspire you. \n\nLocations:\n\nPeople’s Self-Help Housing Office \nCompleted in 2022\, this 24\,000 SF office building has earned LEED Silver Certification. It’s all-electric with a variable refrigerant flow heat pump system for heating and cooling and an integrated heat pump water heater. The 115 kW-photovoltaic solar panels on the roof offsets the entire annual energy use making this a Zero Net Energy Project. The PV array is sized with additional capacity to add EV charging systems in the future. Other green building features include a drought-tolerant landscape design that includes almost all native plant selections\, bioswales to process storm water on site\, an induction cooktop in the break room\, and a focus on indoor air quality for employees. Host: In Balance Green Consulting\, LEED Administrator and Energy Consultant\, with PSHH. \nPatricia Ave Accessory Dwelling Unit \nThis is a new ADU located near Bishop Peak. Built with Passive House principles\, this small home incorporates excellent insulation\, construction assemblies to stop thermal bridging\, strategic placement and sizing of high-quality windows\, all-electric systems for heating\, cooling and hot water\, balanced ventilation with heat recovery and renewable energy. The project will be completing construction at the time of the tour. Host: Cairn Collaborative\, Design-Build \nPhased De-Carbonization of an Existing Residence \nThe owners of this single-family home have been working to reduce the carbon footprint of their home through a phased approach. To avoid the large upfront costs and scheduling impacts of a major remodel\, they clustered renovations and upgrades\, creating a handful of discreet projects over a few years\, starting with roof replacement and solar panels\, progressing through window replacements and mechanical system upgrades then strategic renovations for function and efficiency. Host: Cairn Collaborative\, Design-Build \nMajor Remodel under construction \nThis major remodel in the Sinsheimer neighborhood\, took the existing residence down to the studs. Construction includes new structural elements to expand the second floor and new insulation\, roofing\, siding\, finishes and windows to improve comfort\, performance\, acoustics and\, of course\, aesthetics. Like most existing properties\, the original home was heated with a gas furnace\, but the new owners are committed to all-electric so had the gas meter removed and the gas line capped at the street. The tour will be of an active construction site\, to show the work in progress. Host: Cairn Collaborative\, Design-Build \n  \nAll participants should plan on arriving at People’s Self-Help Housing\, 1060 Kendall Rd\, San Luis Obispo by 1:45.  Transportation to each location will be provided by Ride-On van. Fee:$35 \n\nPresented in partnership with the Tri-Counties Regional Energy Network\, 3C-REN.

SUMMARY:Health and Resilience of Clean Energy Homes
DESCRIPTION:Register \nHomeowner interest in our capacity to control indoor air quality and increase resilience has skyrocketed. Ventilation has been elevated from bathrooms to main living areas\, from a few seconds of exhaust to continuous delivery of fresh filtered air. Concerns around the ability to shelter in place during extreme events range from far-flung rural areas to cities. \nAir pollutants like respiratory viruses and wildfire smoke can be prevented from entering and overwhelming a home. \nThe certainty of a steady supply of clean\, filtered air would mean fewer days missed from school and sports activities along with better grades for our kids\, increased performance at work for adults\, reduced medical expenses\, and positive impacts on our local economies. Health insurance companies acknowledge this and are more frequently investing in energy upgrades\, particularly in low-income housing\, as a risk reduction; proven to be more cost-effective than the expenses of emergency room care and illness. \nMany efficiency improvements go beyond energy savings\, they also make homes healthier and more resilient during power losses\, fires\, and extraordinary weather. \nIt’s also possible that an efficiency project if not installed correctly\, can cause health problems. \nThe EPA\, in response to new research and the escalation in interest and concerns\, has created a new department – “Energy Plus Health”. \nDo assets that result in home resiliency and occupant health contribute to market value? What does the market tell us? \nRE pros pursuing expertise in Clean Energy Homes will advance their knowledge of potential improvements in home health and resiliency resulting from common efficiency improvements\, expanding their credibility as expert guides for their customers. \nCourse Highlights \n\nHow common efficiency assets improve health and resiliency\nHome performance elements vital to indoor air quality\nHealthy Housing Principles\nSmoke infiltration prevention\nCase studies of homes that survived wildfires\nExamples of resiliency in power losses\nConsiderations in marketing and valuation\n\nLearning Objectives \n\nComprehend the beyond-energy benefits of efficiency assets\nUnderstand what to look for in inspections and interviews\nAccurately describe specific efficiency assets and how they deliver health and resiliency\nCommunicate beyond-efficiency benefits in appraisal reports and listings\nEnhance your communication effectiveness with real stories of people who have experienced health improvements and tests of resiliency\n\nAudience \n\nExperienced appraisers\nAgents\nHomeowners\nContractors\n\nLearning level: Novice-advanced RE pros \nInstructor: Debra Little

SUMMARY:CEA/AEA Exam: Central Coast
DESCRIPTION:Register \nCertification as a Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) or Associate Energy Analyst (AEA) signifies that a consultant understands the California Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24\, Part 6) and understands broader energy efficiency issues\, is committed to providing quality service to clients\, and that he/she has made a commitment to conduct business in an ethical fashion. Because CEAs have also made a commitment to ongoing educational requirements\, attending advanced industry training puts them on the cutting edge. \nCEAs are individuals who have demonstrated their mastery of the Residential and/or Nonresidential California Energy Standards through the following steps. \n\nPass the appropriate two-part (Multiple Choice and ACM Modeling) CEA Exam for Residential and/or Nonresidential.\nHave verified experience and/or education and other certifications related to Title 24 compliance work.\nParticipate in a Professional Practices Workshop (PPW)\, sponsored by CABEC.\nAttend at least nine hours per year of continuing education training.\n\nSince energy consultants are not regulated by the state\, CABEC designed the CEA to be a statement of an energy consultant’s working knowledge and understanding of the California Energy Efficiency Standards. When an energy consultant is a Certified Energy Analyst it is a statement to a building department\, builder\, architect\, or homeowner of the professional skills and knowledge of that energy consultant. This certification has become a highly regarded symbol of expertise within the industry and Title 24 compliance in California. \nTo prepare for the exam\, Energy Code Ace is offering a Residential CEA Exam Preparation Workshop scheduled for October 28th from 8:30am to 12:00pm.
