SUMMARY:Recovery Ventilators: Energy Savings and Compliance Credit in the 2022 Energy Code
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nImproved health and cognitive performance. Easier Title 24 compliance. Utility bill savings. These are the reasons to consider incorporating Heat Recovery Ventilators & Energy Recovery Ventilators (collectively Recovery Ventilators or RVs) into your next high-performance home project. \n  \nNick Brown\, the instructor installed his first RV in his home during COVID\, when his daughter and two friends did their schoolwork from the office together. CO2 levels spiked in the early afternoon in that room\, because only Title 24 minimum mechanical ventilation was designed into the house. He solved the problem by installing a Heat Recovery Ventilator and has advocated for these systems ever since. The new All-electric ADU he built has one\, as well\, and we will draw on these experiences and data gathered from these units to better understand these mechanical ventilation systems and their benefits. \n  \nWe will also go over how to add an RV to a Title 24 compliance energy model and the change in energy use that results. We’ll present various configurations of RVs\, including through-the-wall paired units\, packaged HRVs and packaged ERVs\, and various ducting options. \n  \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nUnderstand the basics of how Recovery Ventilators (RVs) work to improve indoor air quality in homes and reduce heating and cooling energy use\nLearn the energy code requirements for mechanical ventilation and how RVs produce a Title 24 compliance credit\nModel a case study home using RVs and examine the energy use in various configurations\nHear best practices for specifying and installing RVs\n\nLearning Units: \n1.5 AIA LU pending for this course \n0.15 ICC CEU approved for this course \n  \nInstructor: \nNick Brown\, Build Smart Group

SUMMARY:Preparing For Home Electrification
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nHomeowners around the world are beginning to embrace electrification (the switch from gas-fired to electric-powered appliances). When done correctly\, home electrification brings a plethora of benefits including better air quality\, improved comfort\, lower environmental footprint\, and in many cases quieter operation. \n  \nThe path to going all-electric can take many forms. For some\, this means upgrading one appliance at a time; for others\, it means replacing them all at once and offsetting electrical loads with on-site solar. Regardless of the timeline\, there are some important planning steps that should take place related to electrical panel optimization\, appliance location\, and considerations for maximizing efficiency. \n  \nIn this webinar\, you’ll hear from Larry Waters\, who will provide guidance to help you plan for your electrification journey. Larry is an HVAC industry veteran who’s installed nothing but heat pumps since 2015. \n3C-REN staff will also join to help you access all available incentives to make electrification affordable. \n

Earn a 3C-REN certificate of completion after finishing the series and passing short quizzes at the end of each class. This series will be hosted twice throughout 2023.  \n  \nDo you have any customers who wait a long time to get hot water somewhere in their house? Do you know someone who is frustrated watching the water run down the drain while waiting when outdoor watering is restricted due to drought? Have you ever wondered why a shower sometimes feels wimpy and what you can do about it without adding a boost pump? And\, given the trend toward decarbonization\, how do you pick a water heater that will provide customer satisfaction and be energy efficient? Would you like to know how to solve these and related problems in existing buildings and prevent them in new ones?  We will discuss the answers to these and other questions during this fast-paced class.   \n  \nLearning Objectives  \n  \nAfter attending this class\, participants will be able to:  \n\nIdentify the causes underlying occupants’ number one hot water complaint (it takes too long for hot water to get from a water heater to fixtures) and what can be done to fix the problem in existing homes and prevent it in new ones.  \nDescribe the value of the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator to right-size the plumbing in single-family and multifamily dwellings. \nAssist homeowners in selecting replacement water heaters that will meet their household needs as well as State climate goals. \nSummarize the variables that need to be evaluated when replacing an existing non-heat pump water heater with a heat pump model. \n\n2 AIA LU’s available for this course \nInstructor: \nGary Klein\, Gary Klein & Associates

SUMMARY:Crafting High Performance Enclosures: Roofs\, Walls\, and Floors - Class 3 High Performance Fundamentals Series
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThis is class 3 of 6 in 3C-REN’s High Performance Fundamentals Certificate series. Earn a 3C-REN certificate of completion after finishing the series and passing short quizzes at the end of each class. This series will be hosted twice throughout 2023.  \n  \nBuilding enclosures – the roof\, walls\, and floor – are the first line of defense between nature and people. Enclosure performance is optimized when air sealing and insulation – two under appreciated and typically underperforming features – are done to high-performance standards rather than the status quo. The preceding class in our High Performance Fundamentals program (How Buildings Work; Science and Buildings and Science in Buildings) covered the scientific principles needed to effectively design high-performance buildings. This class covers installation — the practical application of those principles on the job site – the hands-on activities that differentiate ‘business-as-usual’ from high-performance construction. These include best practices for air sealing\, insulation installation\, and window installation\, along with the tools and methods (e.g.\, blower door testing) used to measure the quality of work\, and the metrics against which the work can be evaluated.   \n  \nLearning Objectives  \nAfter attending this class\, participants will be able to:  \n\nDescribe preferred methods and materials used for air sealing different types of building openings\, and how to test the results; \nExplain the difference between conventional insulation practices and “Quality Insulation Installation (QII)” methods\, and how QII is verified; \nIdentify five common building enclosure installation flaws and how to avoid them.  \nQuantify the magnitude of the gap between minimum energy code compliance and high performance\, where all energy features are confirmed with building performance test methods. \n\n2 AIA LU|HSW available for this course \nInstructor: \nJudy Rachel\, Home Performance Pro \nInstructors: \n\nJudy Rachel\, Home Performance Pro
